• At first I thought you shut down the site. or something like that. then I thought to go to lllost.com , and them I went to twitter.At least MediaTemple was supportive. Still I think they should be more careful next time about what is going on. • Well, I hope we don't let you down when The Heist 2 is released. The cool thing about our servers is, when we get a traffic spike it does what's called "load balancing", essentially, copies the entire site to other servers until the load is back to optimal and then, when the spike is over, scales itself back.
  
  The best thing is this all happens automatically, all of the time. As you can guess, it's pretty complicated (ask yourself the question, if someone posts a forum topic, how does it merge across all the servers?). This is also the reason for the downtime we just had, the original servers were experimental and while the new servers are still experimental, they're based on the lessons learned from the original versions.
  
  Any problems we could face in the future will hopefully be much more contained and I can confirm that we're fully moved to the new servers as of now.
  
  In answer to ProjectFinale, we set-up automated backups to the Amazon S3 servers every night and take local and distributed copies in the morning. The worst case scenario is we have to go back a single day.
  
  Luckily, MediaTemple also take their own backups too so we're covering a number of bases just-in-case. meridimus — 3 Years ago

• I know someone who's site is like that. They use amazon's servers and they have a script that buys them and sells servers. They can be turned off and on in 1 minute and it only costs a buck or 2 an hour. So they always have enough bandwidth and they save tons of money :D The only downside is, if you start using a server, even for just 20 seconds, your charged an hour :( pianite — 3 Years ago
• Yeah, I've been reading up on Amazon EC2 (it means "Elastic Cloud"). It seems like a great idea and I'm already using S3 for the backups. I worked out the costs and it's a lot more expensive on Amazon servers although they're really cool. MediaTemple suits us for now. meridimus — 3 Years ago

• No, we used (gs) because (dv) performs badly for us. We need distributed servers because a single server just doesn't do enough for us.

• My site is very WIP :P Its mostly for learning PHP, I dont really have a purpous for it :( All I can do is simple-ish PHP, HTML, and CSS.
